Critical shear stress for onset of plasticity in a nanocrystalline Cu determined by using nanoindentation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The plastic deformation behavior was investigated by using nanoindentation in a magneto-sputtered nanocrystalline (nc) Cu film with an average grain size of 14 nm. The determined critical shear stress to initiate plasticity in the nc-Cu sample (about 8.3 GPa) is identical to that for nucleation of lattice dislocations in an annealed coarse-grained Cu (8.5 GPa), and both values are close to the theoretical shear strength in the dislocation-free single crystal. This observation, in agreement with the atomistic simulation results, supports the argument that the onset of plasticity of the nc-Cu is associated with initiation of dislocation activities at grain boundaries. 2003 Acta Materialia Inc. Simulating nanoindentation and predicting dislocation nucleation using interatomic potential finite element method
Dislocation nucleation is central to our understanding of the onset of plasticity during nanoindentation. The shear stress in small volumes beneath the nanoindenter can achieve the theoretical limit of a perfect crystal. The ensuing nonlinear elastic instability can trigger homogenous dislocation nucleation inside the crystal. Here we employ the interatomic potential finite element method to si...
متن کاملModel experiments for direct visualization of grain boundary deformation in nanocrystalline metals
Recent experimental studies on nanocrystalline metals have shown that mechanical strength may decrease with decreasing grain size d for d,10– 15 nm. The mechanisms underlying this trend are not understood, although such a relationship is in distinct contrast to that seen in microcrystalline metals whereby strength increases with decreasing grain size. Here, we present direct experimental observ...
متن کاملPREDICTION OF CRITICAL STRESS AND STRAIN FOR THE ONSET OF DYNAMIC RECRYSTALLIZATION IN PLAIN CARBON STEELS
The aim of the present study is the prediction of critical conditions (including critical strain and flow stress) for the initiation of dynamic recrystallization during thermo-mechanical processing of plain carbon steels. For this propose, torsion tests were conducted at different temperature (1050, 1100 and 1150˚C) and strain rates (0.002, 0.02 and 0.2/s). All flow curves showed a peak st...
متن کاملLinking stress-driven microstructural evolution in nanocrystalline aluminium with grain boundary doping of oxygen.
The large fraction of material residing at grain boundaries in nanocrystalline metals and alloys is responsible for their ultrahigh strength, but also undesirable microstructural instability under thermal and mechanical loads. However, the underlying mechanism of stress-driven microstructural evolution is still poorly understood and precludes rational alloy design. Here we combine quantitative ...
متن کاملUncertainty propagation in a multiscale model of nanocrystalline plasticity
We characterize how uncertainties propagate across spatial and temporal scales in a physics-based model of nanocrystalline plasticity of fcc metals. Our model combines molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize atomic-level processes that govern dislocation-based-plastic deformation with a phase field approach to dislocation dynamics (PFDD) that describes how an ensemble of dislocation...
